The 3rd edition of the Guidelines has been written to meet a number of new requirements which have emerged since the Second Edition was published in 1999.
Along with the rate at which engine fuel and air system designs are changing due to emissions legislative cycles, the tubocharger environment is also changing rapidly. Similarly our understanding of the factors which influence turbocharger operation is advancing at a rapid rate.
Publishing the Guidelines as a fixed document on a 2 to 3 year cycle, as we have done up to now, leaves a gap between our knowledge of best practice and what we are able to deliver in terms of advice to our customers. This third edition moves from a fixed publication to a virtual database updateable at more frequent intervals through the internet. Application Engineers can now be sure to have the latest thinking from Holset on their own local PC, and can check for updates regularly via a simple internet link.
The turbocharger is becoming a more complex device and is having to operate in a more demanding environment. Feedback from earlier editions told the authors that Guideline information should be as quantitative as possible and that it should be structured such that it is quickly and easily accessible. We have tried to do this in the third version of the Guidelines, and in some areas we have linked the source of data directly to the original documentation within Holset.
